Japanese Pokémon booster boxes: a buyer's guide for collectors

Box giapponese Pokémon Mega Dream ex

Anyone who collects the Pokémon Trading Card Game sooner or later comes across the Japanese editions. This guide covers the main differences from English, how the series are organised and what to check before you buy.

Why choose a Japanese box

  • They come out first. Expansions reach Japan weeks or months before the English version, often split into smaller sets that are later merged in the international edition.
  • Print quality and cut. Many collectors prefer Japanese cards for their print quality and centering, which matter if you plan to get cards graded.
  • Exclusive sets. Some products, such as High Class Packs or Pokémon Center boxes, only exist in Japan or have different contents.

One thing to know: Japanese cards are not legal in official European tournaments. They are meant for collecting and opening.

How the series are organised

Japanese expansions are grouped into series, each tied to a generation of video games:

  • MEGA series — the current cycle, launched in 2025 with Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia, bringing back Mega Evolutions.
  • Scarlet & Violet — the 2023–2025 series, with sets such as 151, Shiny Treasure ex and Terastal Festival ex.
  • Sword & Shield — the 2019–2023 series of V, VMAX and VSTAR cards, now out of production.

How many packs are in a box

It depends on the kind of set: main expansions usually have 30 packs, enhanced sets such as 151 have 20 packs, and High Class Packs have 10 packs with many more rare cards. The pack count is always shown in each product title.

How to recognise a sealed box

  • The shrink wrap should be intact, tight and uncut, with clean seams on the sides.
  • Be wary of boxes with shiny, loose wrap or folded corners: they may have been resealed.
  • Buy from sellers who state where their products come from and ship with protective packaging.

Every Collectown box is an authentic Japanese product with an intact factory seal. If you can't find a set or want to know arrival times, message us: we also source products on request.
